Editor’s Note: Now it’s time for the pay-off

Welcome back to the magazine after what was not quite a long hot summer. I hope you managed a degree of rest and quality time with loved ones.

I’ve never been able to shift the mindset, as the warmer months approach, that soon there’ll be a long stint of freedom and nothing to worry about — just hanging out with friends and getting home before the street lights turn on.

As Autumn draws in I feel a bit cheated that it didn’t come to pass! But I’m looking forward to catching up with industry friends in the coming months, even if over a coffee or a tipple, not a game of tag!

Before long it will be all eyes on Christmas and the rush as homebuyers look to get in for the holiday season.

Best of luck to everyone taking on a new role in this lovely industry

It’s been a slog for mortgage professionals for years now, but it’s evident that the painstaking work of brokers is paying off, and it must give you a boost to be able to deliver news of falling rates and improved criteria to clients who’ve been waiting it out.

There has also been a host of job moves over the summer. Best of luck to everyone taking on a new role in this lovely industry, which sometimes feels like Hotel California… in a good way!

In our cover feature this month, Leah Milner investigates leasehold reform and whether the new government can fulfil its promise of meaningful change.

Our second feature, by Becky Bellamy, looks at the always relevant buy-to-let market and why, despite challenges, it has a very important place in the economy.

We have a new page this month, our Quick Quiz, where we ask some not-too-challenging questions to have a go at on your coffee break. Answers will be published in next month’s magazine and on our website in the coming weeks. You can, of course, Google them, but that would spoil the fun!
